After the historic summit in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Mr. Trump gave a speech to the press, emphasizing many important points related to bilateral relations and the situation in Ukraine, including mentioning the possibility that he will soon visit Russia.
In his speech, Mr. Trump highly appreciated the effectiveness and goodwill in the dialogue between the two sides, and expressed hope for a substantive solution, towards lasting peace in Ukraine as well as restoring substantive cooperation between Russia and the United States in the new era. “I think we had a very productive meeting. There were a lot of things that we agreed on — for the most part. I think there were just a few key things that we didn’t get to, but we made some progress. So, no agreement yet. I’ll be calling NATO in a few minutes, calling some people that I think are appropriate, and of course calling President Zelensky to let them know about today’s meeting. Ultimately, it’s up to them. They have to agree to what Marco [Rubio, Secretary of State], Steve [Witkoff, Special Envoy], and some of the key people — like Scott [Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury] and John Ratcliffe [CIA Director] — have put forward — thank you very much.
We have great leaders, they’ve done a great job.
I want to thank President Putin and his entire team – faces I know quite well, if not in person, then in the newspapers. You are almost as famous as your boss – especially the one sitting right here. We have had some meetings over the years – productive meetings – and we hope to continue to do so in the future. Let’s have the most productive meeting now: we will actually prevent about five, six, seven thousand – thousands of deaths every week. And President Putin wants that as much as I do.
So, once again, Mr. President, I thank you very much. We will talk again soon, and perhaps we will meet again soon.”
