Jonathan Groff is taking fans “Beyond the Sea” with his next Broadway role, and PEOPLE has an exclusive First Look at the actor in character.
Less than a year after winning the best actor Tony Award, Groff is returning to the boards this spring in Just In Time, a new musical about the life of legendary singer Bobby Darin.
PEOPLE can premiere the official art for the show, which captures Groff posing as the crooner in a blue suit and matching hat.
Darin was one of the music industry’s biggest stars, and was a staple on the charts in the late 1950s and ’60s. He began his career as a member of the iconic Brill Building’s songwriters but struggled to make it as a solo artist — that is, until he catapulted into the spotlight with 1958’s “Splish Splash.” Other hits like “Beyond the Sea,” “Dream Lover” and “Mack the Knife” followed, the latter becoming his signature song.
Throughout his short yet multifaceted career, Darin released 27 albums, starred in 13 movies, had two television variety shows, and won two Grammys and one Golden Globe. He was known for switching up his styles often, exploring all genres of music such as jazz, folk, country and pop. He died in 1973 at the age of 37, while recovering from open heart surgery.

Just In Time will chronicle the highs and the lows of Darin’s meteoric journey. Tony winner Alexis Timbers, who will direct the musical, also developed it based on an original concept by Ted Chapin. He enlisted fellow Tony winner Warren Leight (Side Man) and Isaac Oliver (Intimacy Idiot, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) to pen the book.
New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre will be transformed into “an intimate, immersive night club” for the show, according to a release. There, Groff and a cast of 16 will bring Darin’s story to life through his catalogue of hits.
“Bobby Darin worked across many genres of music, but he was most alive performing in intimate nightclubs,” said Timbers in a statement. “And so, it was vital to Jonathan and myself that we stage Just In Time at Circle in the Square. This is where we could build an environmental nightclub setting including a live, onstage big band that will allow the same sort of intimacy and electrifying audience connection that both Bobby and Jonathan are known for.”

As for Groff, he’s not just starring in Just In Time, but also producing it.
“Bobby Darin was a supernova,” the 39-year-old actor — who also starred in the original Broadway productions of Spring Awakening and Hamilton — said in a statement. “He blazed his way through every corner of the entertainment industry, but his enormous talent, charisma, and pure genius were most on display when he was letting it rip in front of a crowd. “
“This primal passionate love affair he had with the audience was the inspiration for our show’s conceit,” Groff added. “Alex Timber’s distinctive ability to make going to the theater an unforgettable event and Bobby’s signature musicality and explosive fleeting life make Broadway the perfect place to experience the story and essence of this once in a lifetime talent.”
