A 41 year old man tragically lost his life on Monday in Mississippi while attempting to repair his dump truck, after a load of hot-mix asphalt fell on him, according to police.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade reported that officers responded to an accident call around 10:30 a.m. , where they discovered the victim, private contractor Darrell Sheriff, “buried under hot asphalt.”
The incident occurred due to what seemed to be a malfunction with his dump truck, Wade said. It’s believed that Sheriff was working on the dump truck when the asphalt disastrously spilled onto him, leading to his untimely death.

The Associated Press revealed that Sheriff was under the truck fixing a hydraulic line when the tailgate opened and the asphalt poured out onto him. Officer Wade described the victim as a “good, hard-working family man”, as per the family’s account.
He added, “I talked to some of his family here on the scene. They said he was a good man, a hardworking man, just trying to make a living, and that’s just the synopsis of so many people here in the city of Jackson. Let’s keep his family uplifted in prayer,” the Express US reported.
While the investigation is ongoing, it appears to have been an unfortunate accident, confirmed Wade. Asphalt, typically used for constructing and maintaining roads, paths, and sporting areas, is a blend of aggregates, binder, and filler.
Upon arrival at the site, the asphalt’s temperature can skyrocket anywhere between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
