Despite being two months into a successful media career as an NFL analyst, Bill Belichick is hoping to be back on the sidelines for a team in 2025.

Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Belichick is looking to become a head coach again next season.

“Coaching is in his blood; he wants this,” one person close to Belichick told Russini in a text message.

It’s one of the worst-kept secrets in the NFL that Belichick wants to continue coaching. He had two interviews with the Atlanta Falcons during the offseason before they eventually hired Raheem Morris.

Before the first full day of games in Week 1, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Belichick would like to be a head coach in 2025.

Schefter’s report did include the caveat that Belichick planned to be “choosy” because he wanted to land in a situation he considered to be the right one.

The two teams that have already fired their head coaches wouldn’t seem to fall under the banner of a good situation for Belichick. The New Orleans Saints, who fired Dennis Allen on Nov. 4, are mired in cap hell and don’t have a lot of young talent to get excited about.

There would seem to be no chance that the New York Jets, who moved on from Robert Saleh on Oct. 8, are an appealing option for Belichick given the frosty history between the two parties.

Other teams that could potentially have an opening in the offseason include the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders.

Belichick’s reasoning for wanting to find a good situation is simple to understand. He was the second-oldest head coach in the NFL last year and he will turn 73 next April.

The future Hall-of-Famer is also 15 wins away from passing Don Shula for most in NFL history by a head coach. His final season with the New England Patriots in 2023 was his worst in 29 years as a head coach. The team finished last in the AFC East with a 4-13 record.

Belichick is currently working as an analyst for various ESPN programming, including The Pat McAfee Show and the Manningcast during Monday Night Football.
