Can dogs eat bananas, strawberries, apples and tomatoes?

Much like humans, dogs are omnivores, and many enjoy having some vegetables and fruit added to their usual diet. However, some fruits – such as, for example, grapes – can be toxic to dogs, and should be entirely avoided. When it comes to other fruits such as bananas, strawberries, apples and tomatoes (yes, tomatoes are technically fruit!), however, the answer is usually positive – with some caveats.

Can dogs eat bananas?
Bananas are a great source of vitamins and minerals such as potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6. They also contain fiber, which can help regulate a dog’s digestive system; overall, they are an excellent treat for dogs.

However, as they are also high in sugar and carbohydrates, bananas should be given to dogs in moderation; in case of underlying conditions such as diabetes, it’s best to consult your vet before giving your dog any fruit. And of course, the peel needs to be removed first, as it would be a challenge to digest!

Can dogs eat strawberries?
A great source of vitamins and antioxidants, strawberries are another treat which is safe to give to dogs – and they usually enjoy them very much! However, like with any fruit, strawberries should be given to dogs in moderation. Much like bananas they are high in natural sugars, which can lead to weight gain or stomach upset if given in excess.

Strawberries should be thoroughly washed, and the stem and leaves removed, before being fed to your dog. Cutting them in small pieces will also reduce any risk of choking.

Can dogs eat apples?
Few things are as oddly satisfying and the sound of a dog biting through a piece of apple! And overall, apples are very safe for dogs to eat – as long as you take some steps to remove potentially toxic parts of the fruit.

Charity Blue Cross explains, “Apples are a fantastic addition to your dog’s diet; they provide vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fibre. They also provide a way to keep your dog’s teeth clean and helps to freshen their breath!

“However, you should be sure to remove the core and the seeds of the apple before giving it to your dog. The seeds contain a very low amount of cyanide, though this chemical is only released when they are chewed and, as in people, swallowing a couple of pips is unlikely to cause problems.”

Can dogs eat tomatoes?
Tomatoes are generally safe for dogs to eat in small amounts, as they are not toxic. They contain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C and K, potassium, and fiber, which can be beneficial for your dog’s health. However, they also contain a substance called solanine – which can be harmful to dogs in large amounts.

The highest concentration of solanine is found in the leaves and stems of the tomato plant, as well as in unripe green tomatoes. Digestive upset, lethargy, weakness, and even heart and respiratory problems may be observed if a dog consumes large amounts of solanine; however this can be easily avoided by only giving your dog ripe, red tomatoes, with leaves and stem removed.

Overall, dogs can indeed eat bananas, strawberries, apples and tomatoes – just in moderation, and after taking some precautions.
