“I didn’t think I’d cry… but I did”: Adam Wainwright and the return that left Busch Stadium speechless.y1

July 20, 2025 by mrs a

St. Louis, MO — As Adam Wainwright walked out of the Busch Stadium tunnel in a bright gold uniform, a thunderous cheer from more than 40,000 fans greeted not just a baseball legend, but a symbol of loyalty, humility, and a warm heart. But even amid the glory, nothing touched the heart like the silent tears shed by the man once known as the “heart” of the St. Louis Cardinals.

“I told my wife I wasn’t going to cry. But then… I couldn’t help it. When I saw these people—people I’ve known for almost 20 years—standing up and clapping, wearing bananas to celebrate me… I just collapsed,” Wainwright said, his voice cracking and his eyes red as he sat in the press room after the special tribute game.

The “Waino Weekend” event was more than just a tribute. It was an emotional celebration, where the stadium became a living love letter to a man who devoted his entire life to his team and his community.

Since announcing his retirement after the 2023 season, Adam Wainwright has stepped back from the spotlight, focusing on his family, music, and philanthropy. But the fans have never forgotten him. And neither have the Cardinals.

In a special tribute game, the entire team wore yellow uniforms – the colors of the Savannah Bananas – to “play” with Wainwright in a friendly match that was both theatrical and nostalgic. No one could stop laughing, but no one could stop crying.

In the 50th minute, when Wainwright walked off the field to the cheers of “Waino! Waino!” echoing throughout the stands, he could no longer hold back. He raised his head, put his hand to his heart, and quickly wiped away a tear.

“I’ve pitched over 2,500 innings, won 200 games, but this moment… is the only victory that makes me feel like I’ve lived my life.”

Outside the spotlight, few people know that Wainwright and his wife, Jenny, have quietly donated more than $2.5 million over the past decade to build homes for the homeless, support pediatric cancer patients, and provide scholarships for students of color. No PR, no front-row seats. Just help.

“If there was ever a place to call home, this is it.”
Adam Wainwright left with more than a career to be proud of. He left with the heart of a city. And Busch Stadium that day—with its long applause, bananas thrown in the air, and thousands of sparkling eyes—said it all.

Goodbye, Waino. There is no one like you. And no one will ever replace you.
