“If the two presidents find it necessary, there is no doubt that their meeting can be held very quickly. Just like the meeting in Alaska was also arranged quickly,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on September 5.

US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Alaska (USA) on August 15, marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two since Mr. Trump returned to the White House. This was also the first time Mr. Putin set foot on US soil since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022.

According to Mr. Peskov, since the meeting in Alaska, Russia and the US have maintained regular contact at the working level. The Kremlin representative completely rejected the idea of the West providing security guarantees for Kiev.

“Can foreign military forces, especially European and American, provide and ensure security for Ukraine? Absolutely not, they cannot,” Peskov told state news agency RIA Novosti, insisting that this was not a solution that Russia could accept.

In another interview with Russian news agency Argumenty i Fakty published on September 5, Peskov compared President Trump’s stance with that of European countries, which he said were doing everything possible to prevent a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine.

“On the contrary, Mr. Trump is much more constructive,” Mr. Peskov said, arguing that the US leader is relying on these US interests to “do everything to prevent war.”

The Kremlin spokesman then added that Russia wants to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic rather than military means.

“And if Mr. Trump can help us create conditions for these political and diplomatic paths, our interests will coincide. This is absolutely possible and should be welcomed,” he continued.

In recent months, President Trump has constantly changed his attitude towards Russia. At times, he declared that President Putin wanted to end the war, at other times he made harsh criticism of the Russian leader for bombing Ukrainian cities.

On September 4, answering the press, Mr. Trump revealed that he might “talk” with his Russian counterpart in the future, but did not specify whether it would be a face-to-face meeting or a phone call.

In contrast, Russia’s consistent approach has been to flatter Mr Trump and praise the US leader’s peacemaking efforts, while accusing European governments of trying to sabotage the process.
